History of the Brand
In 1956, Maglificio Calzificio Torinese (MCT), already a leading manufacturer of socks and underwear in Italy, created Kappa. MCT was formed in 1916 in the Italian city Turin and Kappa was a result of an error in manufacturing that led to a loss in sales, so the company used the K Kontroll tag and launched a renewed and improved product line in an attempt to achieve new credibility with regards to quality.
Sales boomed and within the following years, the market demand for the garments with K Kontroll grew and Kappa became Italy’s leading producer in socks and underwear. In 1969 the textile industry was hit by recession and MCT’s response was to diversify production.
It was the time when the students’ movement introduced the concept of casual wear and Robe di Kappa was born as the management of MCT decided to start up production of outerwear, based on the success of their best-selling brand. So, the Kappa brand was officially registered.
The sexualised promotional material for Kappa’s famous Jesus Jeans caused great outrage within the religious country. The result was a court judge order to remove hundreds of so-called religiously offensive Kappa posters in 1973. Luckily for Kappa, this controversy led to a great spike in interest towards the brand by the young and fashion-conscious Italians, and Europeans in general.
Their logo dates back to 1969 when during a photo session for another MCT brand catalogue, the Beatrix bathing suits, the photographers realised they made something that’s more than just a beautiful photo. In the end, it was not used in the catalogue and instead, it became the new Robe di Kappa logo.
It’s composed of a bright red wordmark in thin and confident lines and is a great example of a simple and minimalist logotype with style and power. That’s when the most significant period for the brand’s visual identity begins. The famous Omini emblem is designed and it became a recognised symbol of quality and style.
Composed of two silhouettes, a man and a woman, sitting back-to-back, it symbolises equality between men and women in sports. The Omini logo stands for authenticity, quality and humanity. It was redesigned a few times at the beginning of the brand’s history, so in 1978, the wordmark Kappa Sport in red thin sans-serif font was added to the emblem, just beyond the Omini sign.
Three years later, in 1981, the word Sport was deleted from the Kappa logo and the base of the logo as we know it today was created. In 1984 the typeface of the wordmark was made bolder and stronger, which made the logo look more powerful and modern than ever before. It was a reflection of a brand that produces high-quality items and celebrates unique design and style.
In 1994, the Kappa logo was redesigned and it still remains the same until this day. It’s composed of a white emblem and wordmark, which have a red contour. It looks more contemporary and shows the brand’s heritage and its fashion approach.
